If my wife is a full time teacher and we buy a Mac computer can we write it off come Tax Time?
We are in need of a new computer at home and my wife is a teacher.
I was told since she uses the computer at home for writing school work or grading school papers and she likes Mac computers can we write some or most of it off come tax time?
Thanks for the help.
If so are we going to get all the money we spend back?
I’m not 100% certain on this, but you may have to itemize it as an unreimbursed business expense – something that is require for her teaching job but for which the school is unwilling or unable to reimburse her. I believe my brother (who is a police officer) itemized his gun, uniform and body armor expenses.
The caveat with itemizing is that you forgo your standard deduction, meaning that the $1,000 Mac alone isn’t worth ignoring your more than $10,000 deduction as married persons filing jointly (the new amount for 2009 actually increases to $11,400). However it does make sense if you paid a lot in mortgage expense and had some charitable deductions.
If you are able to write off the Mac, you can write off the retail value.
Either way, when your wife makes the purchase, have her talk to the school district’s purchasing office to see if she can use the school’s tax number when making the purchase – it may save a few bucks to be able to avoid local sales taxes, but the legality of this varies by state.
