my computer will not post or boot

I added a 250GB drive to my XP system, the system posts, but it will not boot XP anymore.?
BIOS shows the entire drive, it’s a slave. Perhaps I’m being impatient, but when I boot with it in, the computer posts, shows BIOS, then the black windows login, then black, nothing. And my computer sits there with the drive light flickering and a black screen for what seems like forever. Finally after five or so minutes I punted, took the big drive out and the PC starts XP normally.
set to master to the drive with windows xp OS
set other drives to slave
Boot up problem (Please help)
