I need step by step how to build VOIP server. Start from hardware and software requires.?
Well, depends on how detailed you want step-by-step instructions. I will give you general step instructions.
Step 1: Buy a cheap PC with a NIC card and a sound card (hold music)
Step 2: Download Linux and install it
Step 3: Download and install Asterisk@Home
Step 4: Configure the Asterisk VoIP server through the web manager by adding extensions, VM, etc
Step 5: Get a VoIP (SIP or IAX) phone and configure it to talk to the Asterisk server.
Step 6: You’re all set up
If you want a real phone line attached, you’ll need to get a cheapy compatible WinModem card and you can attach a real phone line.
Also, keep in mind that there are two versions of Asterisk@Home. There’s the version with a custom OS that installs along with Asterisk@Home. The plus with the all-in-one version is that you can skip Step 2. The downside is that it’s makes the hardware dedicated to VoIP only. If you install Linux and use the Linux version of Asterisk@Home, then you can use your Linux box for other things than simply a dedicated VoIP server. The downside to installing Linux is that it’s a little more difficult to set up. The dedicated OS Asterisk@Home is easier to set up and generally has less problems.
Your choice. I recommend the installation of Linux separately because you can do other things with the machine.
Keep in mind that installation will require your VoIP PC to have a CD/DVD reader. You’ll also need another PC that can download and burn CD/DVD images to disks (for installation purposes).
