Can a computer fail to recognize a large portion of its memory ? Even if it is all on one dimm?
I have an HP pavillion ze5700 notebook with 256 mb of DDR PC2700 ram installed in one slot. Recently it has been having significant memory problems,especially when dealing with resource hogging programs (firefox and itunes). Under My computer-> properties it now lists its memory at only 192 mb. Is the memory chip dying? Should I replace it? Can I just fix it by just reseating the dimm? What’s going on, guys?

Does your laptop have 64MB of shared video ram? If so, that’s the culprit. You could try going into your bios and adjusting it down to 32 to get a little back, but I would recommend adding some more memory. You can get 256MB of PC2700 for about $25, or 512MB for $50.
