computer Performance And Data Storage – laptop Memory

laptop memory also known as RAM is a type of data storage for your computer. It is necessary in order for data to be stored and works by integrated circuits. RAM stands for random access memory and the word random means that you can get any piece of data at any time no matter where it is actually stored on the hard disk. Memory is very important for your computers operation.

RAM was first developed around 1950. There are many different types of RAM such as static RAM called SRAM, dynamic RAM called DRAM and other types of RAM called Flash, EPROM and EEPROM. RAM can be stored as bits of data or as a charge. ROM is a type of read only memory.

By increasing the amount of memory in your laptop you can speed up your laptops performance. Cache memory can be used to access data much more easily and faster. Many times you may be able to add to the memory already in your laptop.

Laptops tend to have small memory models in order to save space. Some such type of memory include SDRAM, small outline dual inline memory module (SODIMM), DDR SDRAM and proprietary memory modules. Many times these types of memory can be removed and upgraded.

Many times a laptop will share its memory between the graphics processing unit or GPU and the CPU or central processing unit. By sharing this memory between the two units it is possible to save space and reduce the amount of power your laptop uses. Laptops that are built for gaming and 3-D will tend to have more memory as most laptops do not have the memory needed for 3-D games.

There are several things to think about if you are looking to increase or upgrade the memory for your laptop. First you need to determine the requirements for software you need. Many times games will require more memory. All of your applications will have a minimum and recommended amount of memory. Many times laptops will portion off a section of the RAM just for graphics.

Newest laptops have switched to using DDR3 memory which is much faster. The speed of this memory will also vary depending on the type of memory installed. You need to look at the clock rating and memory type. You also can get information based on the bandwidth. Most laptops have two slots for memory while most desktop computers will have four.
